Just like everyday this week, the networks are rolling out their new shows, and today there are a total of 4 series premieres airing tonight. There are more new shows coming, but they’re scheduled to air next week.So let’s start with NBC. They finally were able to get a pilot from JJ Abrams, but this might either be a hit or miss for them. “Undercovers” is an Action/Crime drama premiering tonight with a premise that isn’t very original. They are two Former CIA agents who left the organization to spend their lives together but get recruited again to join the organization and fight crime together. If you’re thinking like me, that sounds so much like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s Action/Crime film, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Abrams is known for his great writing and existing and past hits that he’s made (Fringe, Alias, and the SUPER HIT Lost) so this show might be just as good as those. You have to think, “Why did NBC get a JJ Abrams pilot?” They’re a fourth place network and haven’t had a hit in years, so why did they get the show? Maybe Abrams was nice enough to give it to them to try to bring back NBC to the top, or (and this is a big or) all the other networks passed because they didn’t like it, and NBC was the last resort for the show. Hopefully it isn’t the latter but with NBC’s recent bad luck, it could’ve happened. Next, ABC who is airing the most pilots tonight with 2 new shows. “Better With You” is a half-hour comedy that is comparable with Modern Family in the sense of how it’s characters are separated into 3 different groups, who are also intertwined as a family. Instead of families, the three groups are actually couples. Everyone in the family is dating (including the matriarch) but after one date, one if the couples already want to get married, so that’s what you’ll be seeing tonight. It sounds like a good premise and I will tune in. It’s been getting pretty good reviews from critics and it’s been sandwiched between 2 great shows, The Middle and Modern Family. The smartest thing any network last season did was to make a entirely new block, and for the most part, it worked. Of course I’m talking about ABC Comedy Wednesday, which is my favorite programming block on television. Other than 1 show, ABC managed to air over one and a half hours of brand new comedies, and it was a smash hit. Cougartown, The Middle, and Modern Family were all quickly renewed and Hank, the only show that underperformed, was quickly canceled after a couple of episodes and if you watched it, you know why. Even today, I regard it as the worst comedy in television history, because I never laughed. It was so bad I almost fell asleep during the pilot. The next new show is ABC’s “The Whole Truth which is a law procedural with an unconventional look at the law process. Instead of Law & Order’s look at just the prosecution, The Whole Truth looks at both the prosecution and the defense, and instead of a huge cast, it will focus mainly on the prosecutor and the attorney. I’ve never heard a premise like this so it’s definitely original, so I’ll be watching tonight. The final new shows set to premiere is from CBS, who is launching yet another crime show, The Defenders. I haven’t read much about this show, but from the title I’m guessing that the show is about attorneys defending their clients. The show is also based in Las Vegas so it’s a semi-original show since I haven’t heard of a crime show based in Vegas since NBC ironically titled “Las Vegas” back in the early 2000s. So those are the new shows premiering tonight! Now for the much more exciting returning shows tonight! NBC is going to start off the 12th season of Law & Order: SVU with a 2 hour premiere about foster parents who lose their child and Detectives Benson and Stabler scramble to find her. Over at CBS, Criminal Minds starts off it’s season premiere with Detective Spicer’s daughter in trouble as a serial killer gets ahold of her and has her hostage. Expect it to get huge numbers tonight. Fox has it’s whole primetime schedule dedicated to Hell’s Kitchen tonight for it’s 2 hour season premiere. ABC seems to have the best programming tonight with the return of ABC Comedy Wednesday and all of last years comedy hits. The Middle, Modern Family, and Cougar Town all return tonight and expect them to all get great ratings, I definitely will be watching all of them! Remember to watch Modern Family tonight at 9 on ABC! I’ve always said that I wasn’t going to go as far to say that Modern Family was my favorite show on television, but I’m now ready to say that it is! So out of all of the shows tonight, Modern Family is my TV pick for tonight. Here are the start titles for all shows tonight: NBC Undercovers – 8:00 P.M.
