If there was a most-improved genre this year, it would be the drama categories. Comedy took that honor last year, but drama took a very fortunate turn for the better. Shows like Mad Men (AMC) and Dexter (Showtime) had strong seasons, and will definitely get a nomination this year. Previously nominated shows like Damages and Friday Night Lights might get nominations, but I’m really hoping for the latter to get through. Also, i wouldnt be surprised if FX’s underappreciated Sons of Anarchy got a nomination, it had another solid season. Last year’s freshman dramas like FX’s Justified and CBS’ The Good Wife hit their creative strides this season, and are very likely to get nominated. It was a great freshman season this year with shows like Boardwalk Empire (HBO), The Killing (AMC), and Game of Thrones (HBO) all premiering to rave reviews from critics.
While I do expect Boardwalk to make the cut, it’s too early to tell if The Killing or Thrones will get a nomination. They both premiered months ago, and Emmy voters might have missed the series, or didn’t get the chance to view all of it before nomination ballots were due.
This is what I think the list will look like on July 14th:
• Dexter (Showtime)
•Mad Men (AMC)
•Boardwalk Empire (HBO)
•Friday Night Lights (NBC)
•The Good Wife (CBS)
Do you agree? I’m just being realistic, if it were me, I would definitely add The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.
Make sure you come back next week where I’ll be predicting who will get nominated in the performing categories in Drama.
