Pickups: ABC, CW Give Back Orders for ‘Revenge’, ‘Ringer’, ‘Suburgatory’, and More

ABC's 'Suburgatory'

It’s been a busy day for the networks as a total of 5 freshman shows were given full season orders and 1 returning show got an additional script order. First, let’s begin with The CW, who gave full season orders to 3 hour-long dramas: Ringer, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, The Secret Circle, executive produced by The Vampire Diaries’ Kevin Williamson, and Hart of Dixie, starring Rachel Bilson. Although all three are new, their performances in the ratings department have varied, with Secret Circle being The CW’s highest-rated new show, although that might be because it has The CW’s overall highest-rated show The Vampire Diaries as it’s lead-in. Secret Circle has averaged 2.4 million viewers and a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49 since its premiere back in September. Ringer has been struggling in the ratings, with it’s most recent episode drawing 1.7 million viewers and a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49. Hart of Dixie hasn’t done so well either, as the show has averaged 1.9 million viewers and a 0.8 with adults 18-49.

Now to ABC, where they renewed two freshman shows, Revenge, airing after it’s hit-comedy Modern Family, and Suburgatory, which airs before it. Both shows have been performing well in their slots, notably Revenge, which recently beat CSI in the ratings just last night. Suburgatory also did well, nearly beating Survivor with a 3.1 rating. Happy Endings, a veteran comedy currently airing its second season, got an order of six additional scripts, with the possibility of it being ordered to produce them at a later time.

The shows have jumped a hurdle, but they still have a major one: Renewal.

Any guesses?

Emmy Nominations: Who got Nominated and Who Didn’t?

20110714-044614.jpg

Before I get to the analysis, I have to say—this is the best list of Emmy nominations I have ever seen! So many people and shows that deserved to be nominated were finally recognized by the Television Academy. They mostly got it right, giving nominations to Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Mireille Enos, Michelle Forbes (The Killing), and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) in the Drama categories. They should also be commended for giving nominations to Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation), Louis C.K. (Louie), Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope), the guys and gals from Modern Family (Ed O’Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julie Bowen, and Sofia Vergara), Chris Colfer (Glee) and Laura Linney (The Big C) in the Comedy categories.

Even though they did a great job, they could always do better, and they definitely overlooked some performers. Katey Segal was snubbed like crazy, not getting any recognition for her performance in Sons of Anarchy. Speaking of SOA, the show didn’t get nominated either, and neither did any of the actors on the show. Over on the Comedy side, I think it was a big error to nominate Melissa McCarthy for her performance in Mike & Molly. Don’t get me wrong, she definitely deserves the nomination, but just not this year. I truly thought that this would finally be the year that Patricia Heaton would return to the Emmy ballots for her incredible performance as Frankie Heck on the ABC Comedy The Middle. Another snub was the exclusion of Sean Bean in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. I’m also disappointed that Fox’s Fringe didn’t get nominated for one single thing. The CW barely gets recognized by the academy, but it did get nominated for one thing this year: Sound Editing on Nikita. Nice. Another snub is in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category, where both Joel McHale (Community) and Rob Lowe (Parks and Recreation) were overlooked by the academy and instead placed Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory) and Matt LeBlanc (Episodes). The biggest disappointment that I had with the nominations were that none of the guys from Parks and Recreation weren’t nominated, especially Nick Offerman! He was truly robbed of the nom by Jon Cryer.

For now, those are the surprises and snubs that I know of. If there are any more (which chances are, there are,) I will of course update the post with more of my rants. So that’s it! Emmy nominations announced! We’re now 66 days away from the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards! Make sure you watch on September 18 at 8/7c on FOX.

Special Edition Most Wanted: The Oprah Finale

Image

This is the most important Most Wanted List to date, and you know why. This week, something historic will happen. So historic, it will change television and media overall forever. Daytime will never be the same again without her, and this week, she takes the top spot by a mile. More details below, but we also will see a plethora of finales and premieres this week. So large, in fact, that I decided to double the amount of things that are Most Wanted this week to 10. How’s that for a special edition?! The list is down below:

1. The Oprah Winfrey Show – Series Finale

It’s the end of an era. After almost 5,000 shows and millions of lives changed, Oprah is saying goodbye to her daily talk show on Wednesday and with it comes sadness for her dedicated fans (me included.) For the past 4 years, which have been the most important for me growing up (from 12 to now 16,) I have watched Oprah and if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t even be remotely interested in the television world. She set an example of how the medium of television is so powerful and how far you can go in this world. In this judgmental world, Oprah was my only escaping alternate dimension where I learned to be an open-minded person, and I owe any humility I have to her. My absolute favorite moment on the Oprah show was when she reunited Clemantine and Claire Wamariya with their family after they were torn apart from the Rwandan genocide. It gives me chills every time I watch that episode, and I well definitely never forget it. Make sure you watch these final three shows! Check your local listings if you don’t already know when Oprah airs in your area. Especially watch the final Oprah Winfrey Show this Wednesday.

2. American Idol

For American Idol, a completely revamped judge panel and format worked for the better, and everyone is calling it a comeback. This season has started with hundreds of thousands of contestants, and it all comes down to the final two: Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina. The youngest final two ever are sure to bring a large audience this Wednesday, and a record number of votes. In recent seasons, the winners haven’t made it big. But this year the winner is sure to make a splash on the charts, if America gets it right, which I think will happen this year.

3. The Hangover Part II

Two years after the record-breaking comedy made it’s way to theaters, the guys are doing it again. This time it’s Stu, and you know it’s going to be crazy when you see a facial tattoo freshly imprinted around Stu’s eye. Problem is, that could stop the movie from coming out. Hopefully it won’t, but who knows what might happen at today’s hearing in Missouri. If the plaintiffs request for an injunction is denied, everything should be fine for The Hangover’s release this Friday.

4. Modern Family Season Finale

Another hilarious season ends with the family trying to surprise Jay with a birthday party, Phil meets an enemy from college, and Cam gets in some trouble at a bakery. You know, the typical craziness? The producers must have something special in store for this Wednesday’s finale, and you should definitely tune in.

5. Glee Season Finale

The most expensive Glee episode to-date airs tonight, and it happens to be the finale episode. New Directions makes it’s way to the New York City to make a splash at the nationals which are being held in the city. Will they win? And how is all the drama from this past season going to end? Tune in to find out!

6. The Middle Season Finale

The stellar second season ends with uncertainty that that Brick may be held back. Frankie does all she can to help Brick and keep the family from going over the edge as usual. Expect the ever-present craziness from Sue and Axl to also be a main point in this sweet and quirky comedy starring Patricia Heaton.

7. The Event Series Finale

A bumpy freshman run was all The Event got, and the disappointing show is ending tonight with an uncertain future. Will ‘The Event’ happen? If it does, when will it happen? And most of all: WHAT THE HELL IS THE EVENT?!

8. Kung Fu Panda 2

This hilarious animated comedy is back and will hopefully be better than the already great original. Word is that DreamWorks wants to make this a 6-Picture adventure. They’ll have to keep it fresh if they want to stretch it out that long. Either way, early reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and this movie’s sure to earn big bucks this Thursday.

9. Dancing With the Stars Finale

I truly thought that Kirstie Alley was going to get kicked-off in the opening week, and now she’s in the final two. Boy was I wrong! Alley and Chelsea Kane will dance all the way to the mirror ball trophy this Tuesday, which is probably very dusty right about now.

10. Chelsea Lately

Even with all these shows and movies, this hilarious late-night show has crept it’s way back into the list with a great week of guests. Tonight, American Idol Judge Randy Jackson makes his way on the show for what I believe will be the first time. You think that’s big? Wait later in the week for even more big TV and movie stars from shows like Glee and movies like The Hangover!

Wow! Isn’t it packed?! This is going o be one hell of a week! Here’s another reminder to make sure you watch the Oprah Finale this Wednesday Come back next week for an all-new Most Wanted List!

ABC Fall Schedule

Image

It was ABC’s turn to reveal its schedule ahead of its upfront this afternoon in New York City. With it, they unveiled over 13 news that will premiere in the Fall and midseason. Among them, the high-profile action series ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and the new comedy from Tim Allen, now titled ‘Last Man Standing,’ and will air on Thursday and Tuesday nights, respectively. Right after the Tim Allen comedy will premiere another laffer, ‘Man Up,’ confirming what many have predicted to happen: A second ABC Comedy block. Two new shows will premiere on Wednesday nights, one right before ‘Modern Family,’ (Suburgatory) and a drama right after Happy Endings(Revenge.) But wait, what happened to Cougar Town? ABC has actually held the Courtney Cox comedy until the midseason, premiering after ‘Dancing With the Stars’ ends next year. Usually, midseason shows don’t get full season pickups, but ‘Town’ was picked up for a full 22-episode season, so CT fans rejoice! Only one change has come to Fridays, with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition being moved from Sunday nights to Friday nights, and Saturday nights are filled with College football. Finally, a big change to Sundays, with 2 new dramas being added to save the troubled night, with veteran drama ‘Desperate Housewives’ aging with every passing season. Fantasy drama ‘Once Upon A Time’ airs at 8 on Sundays, and drama/thriller ‘Pan Am’ will air right after ‘Housewives’ at 10 PM.

Just as I’ve done on my other schedule posts, here’s how the Fall schedule will look like on your TV listings, from Entertainment Weekly.

The Most Wanted List: Entertainment Weekly’s Parks and & Rec Cover!

Image

1. Entertainment Weekly’s Parks & Rec Cover

How long I’ve waited for this cover. After 3 seasons on the air, NBC’s Parks and Recreation is finally getting the recognition it deserves as Entertainment Weekly becomes the first magazine to feature the cast on the cover. Adam Scott was the only member of the cast that wasn’t on the cover because at the time, there was a snowstorm in New York(where he was located. It’s ratings are much higher this season than last and it got a series high in viewers when it came back for Season 3. It comes out this Friday on newsstands, but I got the cover extra early! EW gave 101 reasons(!) why they love Parks & Rec, and I agree with every single one.

2. Justin Bieber on Chelsea Lately

He’s already been on the show 3 times, and every time he comes by, it’s hilarious. The quick jabs that Chelsea throws and Bieber’s immediate flirting makes the interview informative, awkward, and very, very funny. This comes after a very great weekend at the box office with his movie (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never) being a close second to blockbuster vets like Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s new comedy (Just Go With It), and he’s only 16. Justin makes his fourth appearance on E!’s Chelsea Lately tonight.

3. Fox’s Traffic Light

I saw the Pilot of Traffic Light a few days after it aired and it was absolutely incredible. It set out everything that’s great for a new comedy series: Likable characters, relationships, and an everlasting storyline about 3 college friends who maintain their friendship going into their thirties. Reviews of the show were great and many say that the pilot was actually weaker than future episodes, so I can’t wait until this Tuesday at 9:30!

4. Grammy Fallout

The ceremony was painfully long, and the outcome of the major categories were too. I’m fine with Lady Antebellum winning Record or Song of the Year, but why the hell did they win both? Also, I truly thought it was Eminem’s comeback year, and even though it was, it was not recognized as it should’ve been by Grammy voters. Instead, Arcade Fire won (I’ll be trying them out soon) and what’s surely the most shocking win in the Best New Artist category in over a decade, the underdog that is Esperanza Spalding won the category after almost everyone predicted that it would be either Drake or Justin Bieber. It worked in Spalding’s favor though, her album is at it’s highest point ever on iTunes.

5. The Return of Fizbo and DeDe on Modern Family!

Cam’s hilarious clown returns for the first time in Season 2 of ABS’s Modern Family and it shouldn’t disappoint. He apparently has problems with Mitchell about being the clown on Lily’s birthday party. Also, Mitch and Claire’s crazy mother is coming back and she’s bringing Claire’s ex-boyfriend (who’s going to be played by Matt Dillon) along with her. It’s an episode of Modern Fanily you can’t miss!

That’s a wrap! Sorry I took a while, I was a bit busy, but make sure you check back next Monday for a brand new Most Wanted List!

SAG Awards Tonight! What Should You Expect?

Image

Awards season is in full swing, and this is the final awards show before the big ceremonies begin (Grammys, Oscars!)

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards airs live tonight, and all the big hitters in film and television are expected to arrive at the event. Shows like Modern Family and Glee have been nominated. And films such as Black Swan and The Social Network have been nominated for Oustanding Motion Picture. A big shock to me was that Inception wasn’t nominated in this category! It should’ve taken The Fighter’s spot in the nominations. Inception only got 1 nomination, and it was for stunts. Another snub for Inception was the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t get a nomination for Inception, marking another year that Leonardo DiCaprio gets snubbed for fantastic performances (last year, DiCaprio didn’t get nominated for Shutter Island)

The King’s Speech is being called the frontrunner, but The Social Network is being called one of the best movies of this decade. For me, it’s just too close to call. All I know is that it’s one of these two pictures is going to get the highest honor tonight.

Some shows didn’t get nominated just because the shows were in their infancy on television. The Walking Dead didn’t get any nods, and even though I would’ve called this a snub I’m not going to because there were only six episodes in it’s first season. The only show that got first season love was the Betty White comedy Hot In Cleveland, which had 12 episodes in it’s first season.

On the TV drama acting side, there were no surprises for Best Actor in a Drama, with Steve Buscemi, being the only newcomer to that category. Someone who obviously got snubbed: Kyle Chandler for Friday Night Lights, of course. This is FNL’s final season, so the Screen Actors Guild has one more year to show some love for one of TV’s best dramas. For Best Actress, Elisabeth Moss is the only person who didn’t get a nomination last year, but six people were nominated last year, compared to five this year. Some snubs in this category were obvious; Connie Britton should’ve gotten a nomination for Friday Night Lights, and Patricia Arquette should’ve gotten a nod for her performance in the final season of Medium.

Some pleasant surprises in the TV Comedy side came as both Ty Burrell and Ed O’Neill got Best Actor nominations for their performances on Modern Family. Chris Colfer also got a deserved nomination for Glee. The Best Actor category got a huge change from last year, with Alec Baldwin and Steve Carell being the only actors that were nominated last year. I would say that Eric Stonestreet got snubbed for Modern Family, but he won the Emmy last year for Best Actor in a Comedy, and the 2 nods for his colleagues make up for the snub. For Best Actress in a Comedy, Sofia Vergara deservedly got a surprise nod for Modern Family, Jane Lynch also got a deserved nod for Glee, and Betty White got a nomination for Hot In Cleveland at 89 years old, an astonishing accomplishment for such a long and successful career. Just like the Best Actor category, this category also had many newcomers, with Tiny Fey and Edie Falco being the only two to be nominated last year. The Best Comedy category was very hard to choose for last year, and it will be difficult this year as well, with Hot In Cleveland being the only newcomer to this category. The frontrunners in this category are Glee and Modern Family and it’s anybody’s guess as to which will win tonight. On the drama side, True Blood got replaced by Boardwalk Empire, another HBO drama, but AMC’s Mad Men has this one in the bag no matter what.

All of these thoughts were my guesses, but make sure to watch tonight to find out who actually won. The SAG Awards will be simulcast tonight at 8 P.M. EST on TNT and TBS.

Golden Globes TONIGHT! What Should You Expect?

P214

Today is Golden Globes day! It’s been a long time coming, but tonight is the night. I like the Golden Globes, but I can’t take it as seriously as I would with the Emmys or the Oscars (which is next month!) As I tweeted when the nominations were announced, I thought it was ridiculous that they nominated ‘The Tourist’ for Best Comedy/Musical Picture! What the hell was the Hollywood Foreign Press smoking?! Fortunately, ‘The Tourist’ didn’t get many nominations. Instead, the most nominations went to Colin Firth’s monarchy drama, ‘The King’s Speech’, with 7 nominations, and The Social Network comes close behind with 6 nods. I’m rooting for The Social Network to win Best Drama, and Toy Story 3 to win for Best Animated Feature.

On the television side, the Golden Globes should take the same route as the Emmys did, deservedly awarding Best Drama and Comedy Series to Mad Men and Modern Family respectively. In the actors and actresses category for television is up in the air for me. Kyra Sedgwick’s win at the Emmys was a great surprise, but I’m just not sure if the Hollywood Foreign Press will be willing to give her that award. Also, expect The Pacific to win for best TV miniseries.

I’ll have live results on my twitter account (@JuniorTV) and I’ll have a results post tomorrow. Make sure you tune in tonight to watch the 67th annual Golden Globes tonight with host Ricky Gervais on NBC.

Holiday-Themed Shows Airing This Week

P108

With many shows starting their Midseason hiatus either this week or next week, primetime shows are airing their Christmas-themed episodes. I know for a fact that Glee is doing a Christmas-themed episode tonight, which will probably have many songs from their newest album respectfully named, The Christmas Album, that was released back in November. ABC aired their Merry Christmas Charlie Brown special last night, and will do so again on Christmas Day. Tonight, ABC is airing Christmas episodes of The Middle and Better With You. Modern Family is oddly not having a Christmas episode this year, but had an amazing one last year. Cougar Town is also doing the same. Nickelodeon will be airing their early instant classic, Merry Christmas Drake & Josh, which was a huge hit when it aired back in 2007, with over 10 million viewers watching on Christmas Eve that year. NBC is aired a christmas themed episode of Minute To Win It. Today NBC isn’t airing any holiday themed programming as a new episode of The Sing-Off and a repeat of Law & Order: SVU will fill-in the night. Fox, CBS, and the CW are following suit with no christmas programming tonight. I’ll be updating you guys daily on which shows will have holiday themed episodes, including small decals of Christmas shows that are airing tonight on tomorrow’s post, so stay tuned!
